For a second there I thought Eric J was dancing with Chris Brown, lol.  Even though you get limited access to see the Breezy look-a-like, pay attention to the different interpretations of the steps between Eric J and him, both bring two kinds of flavor to the routine.

MusicLife Interview w/ Emily King

July 22, 2011 - The Park at Fourteenth - Washington, DC

In 2007, singer/songwriter Emily King debuted her soulful inspired album East Side Story.  If her name doesn't ring a bell, maybe her song Walk in My Shoes might bring back a musical memory to your ear.  Her album is definitely one of those hidden gems that slipped under the radar to most mainstream listeners but was still recognized in the music industry and was received a Grammy nominee for Best Contemporary R&B Album.

After being gone for 3 years, Emily is back with a new album to introduce the world.  She recently performed as part of The Park Unplugged happy hour event hosted by Beny Blaq Entertainment, LLC.  I was able to sit down with Emily before her performance to find out what she's been doing since releasing her debut album, being dropped by J Records and becoming independent, and the new EP Seven.

J9 talks it up with EK

MusicLife:  In 2008 I saw you perform at the Black Cat when you were promoting East Side Story.  So what have you been doing since then?

Emily King:  I've been writing a lot.  I parted ways with my label and I just took a lot of time to find and create the kind of music I enjoy.  And you know, just living, ups and downs.

MusicLife:  So you said you parted ways with J Records?  What happened and what made you decide to go the independent route?

EK:  They [J Records] dropped me.  But it wasn't really working out with us anyway for some creative reasons.  A lot of people were losing their jobs at the time and it's hard to have a common goal when everybody's just trying to survive.  So it worked out for the better and since then I've kinda learned to do everything they used to do and I'm still learning but it's a good skill.

MusicLife:  How is it being independent?  Is this going to be a permanent thing for you like do this for a while and then go back on the market for another label?

EK:  It's interesting because most people I talk to are just like labels are dead and then I do have a couple of friends who are still on labels.  People like Adele they have label support.  But there's something to doing it yourself and having the experience.  And I think that makes sense for me right now.  I don't know what's going to happen.  If the right deal comes along . .

MusicLife:  Seven dropped last week.  It is such a great album.  It's definitely a different sound from East Side Story.  Explain the creative process in developing the album and how is it different from East Side Story?

EK:  East Side Story was recorded over a long period of time as well, 3 years but the difference is the people. I was with the incredible Chucky Thompson.  This time I collaborated with Jeremy Most.  We didn't have the fancy studios, we didn't have the engineers.  I mean we had to learn a lot of things against our own will, which now I'm so thankful for.  Most of it was recorded from our homes.  So that was completely a new experience for me.

MusicLife:  Your parents are Jazz singers so I know they probably have inspired you to become a singer?  What other artists have inspired you?

EK:  I always go back to the top 3, [Jimi] Hendrix, [Bob] Marley, and The Beatles.  I didn't start liking them until I was a teenager.  I had many more influences before that but I feel like style wise something just clicked when I heard those people.

MusicLife:  Who are you listening to now?

EK:  I like MGMT a lot, such quality.  I listen to a lot of soul.  I've been listening to Marvin Gaye.  I have a lot of friends who are musicians I listen to José James, Krystle Warren, Aabaraki.

MusicLife:  In your song Colorblind you say that "music always healed the pain that you felt" and for me that lyric is one of the reasons why music is so important in my life.  So my question to you is what is your music life, how does music define you?

EK:  It's everything in my life.  I don't know if I've made it that way or that's just the way it is for most people.  Sometimes I wake up in the morning and I don't feel like oh it's a new day, happy and I put on some music and that saves me, changes my mind right away.  It's a great way to change your mind.  It's brought me so many friends and so many different experiences so I'm trying to give it what I can.

Rirai (a EK fan because of me) and I with Emily

The Price of Fame: Amy Winehouse Pays for Not Going to "Rehab"

The Price of Fame:  A featured post that takes a look at musicians and the impact that success has on their lives

On Saturday, July 23, 2011, the music world was shaken when news spread that British singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse was found dead in her apartment in London.  She was only 27.  Amy was known publicly for her drug and alcohol abuse, openly acknowledging it in songs like Rehab singing  "they tried to make me go to rehab and I said no, no, no."  Despite her visible struggle and signs of self-destruction, people were still in shock of this great loss.  Although the cause of death at this time is unknown, her lifestyle leads many to speculate it was drug/alochol related.

Amy Winehouse debuted her platinum album Frank in 2003, which was a hit in the UK.  It wasn't until her 2006 dark yet soulful sophomore album Back to Black when her popularity spread to the US.  Amy reintroduced this resurgence of British soul singers to the US, paving the way for fellow British artists like Duffy, Adele, and Florence and the Machine to achieve Stateside success.  In 2008, Winehouse's musical brilliance was recognized when she won 5 Grammys for Best Pop Vocal Album for Back to Black, Best New Artist, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Rehab.

One can even say her career and drug/alcohol abuse went hand in hand from the musical content of her songs like "Rehab" to even her name "Winehouse."  It was has if she had to live up to this destructive persona based on drugs and alcohol and maintain that lifestyle to continue her career.  Makes you think that maybe her troubled life gave her notable success and that she probably wouldn't have been that successful had she lived a straight and narrow life.  It was as if she was doomed from the start.

Amy experienced many life altering events like her father's extra-martial affairs and the death of her grandmother who she attributed to starting her career.  These events caused Amy to suffer from manic depression, an eating disorder and self-mutilation.  Even though these issues were apparent before her fame, becoming famous probably didn't help the situation.  Being famous comes with its own pressures and one can easily fall prey to negative influences, including the glamorization of drug/alcohol use making it acceptable.  For Amy, it may not have been the healthiest of environments to be in, especially when you're already in a fragile frame of mind.  This can often make things worse triggering the dependency on drugs/alcohol to cope, which one can probably assume was the case for Amy.

Due to Amy's very public battle with her drug/alcohol abuse, in recent years, she's been less known for her musical contributions and more for her addictions, destructive relationship with her ex-husband, and numerous not so pleasant concert performances.  Just like people did with Lauryn Hill, fans just banked on the hope that one day Amy would get herself somewhat together to grace the world with another great album, especially when last year there were reports she was on the road to some type of recovery.

She joins the many other talent artists in the 27 Club, made up of artists that were taken from the music world too soon, most due to drug/mental related issues:
  • Brian Jones - Rolling Stones founder and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist. Drowned in swimming pool in 1969. Autopsy his heart and liver were enlarged due to drug and alcohol abuse.
  • Janis Joplin - Singer/songwriter died of probable heroin overdose in 1970.
  • Jimi Hendrix - Singer/songwriter/electric guitarist.  Suffocated on vomit after combining sleeping pills with wine in 1970.
  • Jim Morrison - Singer/songwriter for the rock group The Doors who died of apparent heart failure in 1971.  No autopsy was done but many believe the cause was a heroine overdose.
  • Kurt Cobain - Founding member, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter for rock group Nirvana died of suicide by gunshot in 1994.

British actor and friend of Amy's Russell Brand made a statement on his blog today about the situation which I believe really sheds light on the real issue.  Read the excerpt below:

Now Amy Winehouse is dead, like many others whose unnecessary deaths have been retrospectively romanticized, at 27 years old. Whether this tragedy was preventable or not is now irrelevant. It is not preventable today. We have lost a beautiful and talented woman to this disease. Not all addicts have Amy’s incredible talent. Or Kurt’s or Jimi’s or Janis’s, some people just get the affliction. All we can do is adapt the way we view this condition, not as a crime or a romantic affectation but as a disease that will kill. We need to review the way society treats addicts, not as criminals but as sick people in need of care.

It's truly a shame that Amy's life was cut short when she only just scratched the surface.  We are now left to wonder where her talent could've taken her.  Via Twitter, Lady Gaga said it best . . .

Amy changed pop music forever, I remember knowing there was hope, and feeling not alone because of her. She lived jazz, she lived the blues.

SYTYCD Season 8 Top 10: ChinaBabe Edition

So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD)

On Wednesday, July 20th the Top 10 dancers hit the stage! Overall, the night was good. The addition of the All-Stars changes the quality of the show.  I'm still happy with the All-Stars joining the contestants.

The special "celebrity" judge this week was Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother)!!! NPH is the man and I love him!!! He was especially tough on the Broadway routines and the choreographer...

I was super disappointed to find out that each contestant would only perform once...we could have skipped all the clips of rehearsal for more dance!!! It should have been one performance with an All-Star and one performance, in a different dance style, with contestants that have never partnered on the show before... #imjustsayin *tisk tisk tisk* at the good folks at SYTYCD! I felt cheated..

Check out some of my favorite performances...

Contestants: Sasha with All-Star Twitch (S4)
Style: Hip Hop
Song: Misty Blue by Dorothy Moore
Choreographer: Christopher Scott

I was teary eyed when I heard, through the rumor mill, that Sasha would be paired with Twitch...I knew this performance would be amazing.  I became a little nervous when I realized that they would be choreographed by Christopher Scott. However, all my worries were washed away with Sasha's first 8 count!!!! I love everything that is Sasha Mallory!!!! She is amazing and I could not believe I was crying because this routine truly moved me...#Sucka4Sasha

Contestants: Clarice with All-Star Robert (S7)
Style: Bollywood
Song: Aila Re Aila by Khatta Meetha
Choreographer: Nakul Dev Mahajan

There were a couple of performances were I found myself amazed by the All-Stars...Robert was fascinating!!! I was in total and complete awe of him!!!! This routine was made for him!!! I love ROBERT!!!! Oh, I'm sorry...Clarice was in the routine and she did some awesome work... (BIG SMILE!)

Contestants: Caitlynn with All-Star Pasha (S3)
Style: Argentine Tango (Ballroom)
Song: Malajunta by Orquesta Color Tango
Choreographer: Leonardo Barrionuevo and Miriam Larici

This performance was absolutely genius...Caitlynn was great! I am not a fan of Pasha, at all...we have a love/hate relationship... However, I realized that as long as Pasha has on his shirt...I'm a fan!!! #imjustsayin
*I digressed*
I thought everything about the movement of this routine was amazingly beautiful and effortless!!!

Contestants: Ricky with All-Star Allison (S2)
Style: Jazz/Contemporary
Song: Precious Things by Tori Amos
Choreographer: Tyce Diorio

This was another pairing I was excited to see...I knew it would be magical!!! Ricky is great and I'm happy that he finally received some choreography that allowed him to be dark and strong. However, I think he can be pushed waaaayyyyy further! It kind of reminded me of Mia Michael's Addiction routine with Kupono and Kayla in Season 5.

Please click on the contestants name to view the performance.

Jordan with All-Star Brandon (S5) their Contemporary routine was great! I found myself watching Brandon in amazement!!! I know that Jordan is super fantastic but Brandon is something phenomenal!

Marko with All-Star Chelsi (S4) their Samba was good.  He received very high marks from the judges.  I didn't see all the amazingness the judges were speaking of...but hey...I'm just a blogger *wink*

Melaine with All-Star Pasha (S3) their Viennese Waltz was nice...Melaine is amazing and this routine was nice and sweet...The judges spoke a lot about strength, but all I saw was grace.

Tadd with All-Star Comfort (S4) their Hip Hop number was good. Tadd did a great job. The dance was good, the partnering was good, yet something was lacking...

Please click on the contestants name to view the performance.

The dancers in danger will be Mitchell and Jess for sure!!! I have no idea about the third in danger...

Mitchell with All-Star Melody (S1) their Broadway number was interesting. If we had not seen the rehearsal clip we would have had NO idea of the "story" of the number...which was confusing.  I love me some Tyce but with this routine "umm I'm not sure"... Neil Patrick Harris took a swipe at Tyce for his under developed "storyline" for the routine...really Airplanes? No one got that...

Jess with All-Star Kathyrn (S6) their Contemporary routine was okay. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Jess is a great dancer however his height is a problem.  When he is partnered with a tall female dancer it just looks strange.
Sidenote: Kathyrn, by accident kicked him in the chest during the performance (at :34) it sort of put a hick-up in the middle of the also was a little funny to me...

***Season 8 All Star Update***
Since the All-Stars were announced I've been trying to understand why there has not been an official website, posting or pictures of the new group of All-Stars.  Well, apparently, the good folks at SYTYCD decided to rotate the group of All-Stars.  According to Nigel Lythgoe, Executive Producer and Head Judge, there will be a new group of All-Stars next week....
I was okay with this group of All-Stars...I'm sure we will see some of our favorites, Ade, Neil, Lauren and Anya....However, there are only a few Hip Hop dancers from seasons past.  I just hope no one is talking to Legacy (S6)....NOOOooooooooo!!!! There were early rumors of Hok (S3) to become apart of the All-Stars cast but I guess we will have to wait and see...

What was your favorite routine?

Who do you think is going home?

What All-Star would you like to see?

Analyze This: "Best Thing I Never Had" by Beyonce

Analyze This:  An in depth look at the lyrical content of a song to provide insight

What goes around comes back around (hey my baby)
What goes around comes back around (hey my baby)
What goes around comes back around (hey my baby)
What goes around comes back around (hey my baby)

There was a time
I thought, that you did everything right
No lies, no wrong
Boy I, must've been outta my mind
So when I think of the time that I almost loved you
You showed your ass and I saw the real you

Thank God you blew it
Thank God I dodged the bullet
I'm so over you
So baby good lookin' out

I wanted you bad
I'm so through with it
Cuz honestly you turned out to be the best thing I never had
You turned out to be the best thing I never had
And I'm gon' always be the best thing you never had
I bet it sucks to be you right now

So sad, you're hurt
Boo hoo, oh, did you expect me to care?
You don't deserve my tears
I guess that's why they ain't there
When I think that there was a time that I almost loved you
You showed your ass and I saw the real you

I know you want me back
It's time to face the facts
That I'm the one that's got away
Lord knows that it would take another place, another time, another world, another life
Thank God I found the good in goodbye

J9's Analysis:  Drake sang about the best thing he ever had and now Bey sings about the best thing she never had.  At first listen, some may be a bit confused as to why Bey would sing about something she never had being the best.  How could that be you ask. . . well let me explain. . . sometimes it takes experiencing the worse to realize the best when it comes along.  In other words, sometimes it takes leaving someone to appreciate someone better when he/she comes along.  It's like you're telling your ex "had it not been for you showing your real colors I would have never let you go and left myself open to find a better person that treats me the way I deserve to be treated."

My favorite line in the song is "Thank God I found the good in goodbye."  This shows a sign of maturity when you can turn a negative situation into a positive and take it as a learning experience.

Bey then touches upon what sometimes happens is when your ex realizes you've had enough and are about to sever ties, they try to get back in your good graces . . . you know how the saying goes "you never miss a good thing til it's gone."

The video does a wonderful job at bring the song to life by showing flashbacks of Bey's "bad relationship" while she embarks on the next chapter of her life, marrying the man she wouldn't have been with had she not let the other guy go. The video is probably what made me like the song a little bit more than I did before.

DJ Khaled - We the Best Forever
We The Best Forever [Explicit] [+digital booklet]
2 Cents:  He might be the most irritating DJ (next to Funkmaster Flex), however if a hot beat and A-List features turn you on, then this is the album for you.
